Let’s talk tees. I can’t be the only one forever on a journey to find the perfect t-shirt. But having the right fabric, fit, and look in a basic tee can go a long way toward nailing that coveted effortless look everyone’s always posting (that I have never once actually achieved). The tee or tank is one piece of the puzzle, so today we’re going to look a bit more closely at sustainable t-shirts, as that’s what we’re all about, after all.
Basics seem so basic… until you realize that they’re actually the pieces you reach for on most days, particularly when you’re at home, on the couch, in bed, or out running errands (or actually running)—things that take up a lot more of our time than cocktail parties and fancy dinners. They’re basic because in the end, we just need them to be comfortable, versatile, and hopefully long-lasting. At least that’s what I want from my t-shirts and tanks (and underwear, too, but that’s a subject I’ve covered in a different post).

Sustainable t-shirts aren’t guaranteed to be of higher quality than their fast fashion counterparts, but in most cases this does ring true. If a brand is willing to pay more to produce tees made of organic cotton, linen, hemp, or recycled materials, they are already marketing to a more discerning customer than your average shopper, so they’ve likely considered features like construction, fit, and fabric versus *just* profit, when producing their pieces. Even so, I’ll say what I always say: shop around and decide for yourself. Look at each listing’s fine print and keep your eyes open for signs of greenwashing, wherever you shop.
Below you’ll find my favorite sources for sustainable womens tees; most of these brands also carry mens and/or unisex pieces as well, and I’ve noted those as well as details in sizing, styles, and price point, too.

They’re best for affordable organic shirts (as well as many other wardrobe staples like dresses, lounge, underwear, and more), size inclusive clothing, and versatile, easy pieces. MATE The Label
MATE, a B Corp and Climate Neutral brand offering GOTS Certified organic womens t-shirts, tops, loungewear, and more (along with a limited kids and mens collection that does include t-shirts), is probably one of the more well-known options for stylish yet sustainable tees. They are best known for their lightweight organic cotton styles (short and long sleeve), but they also have regenerative hemp tees. Everything is offered in soft earth tones and neutrals.

PACT Apparel
Eco-minded dressers love PACT for their affordable fair trade and organic cotton basics for women and men. Their price point of about $30-$35 per top (and bundle savings offered) are probably as close as you’ll get to conventional t-shirt prices, making organic cotton clothing more accessible to the average person. There you’ll find t-shirts in classic, slub, and lightweight styles, along with ribbed and square neck tanks, perfect for layering.

Nation Ltd
Nation Ltd is a go-to for those basics that feel special and elevated. (I’ve ordered a couple times myself and been happy with the tops, but I usually purchase on sale.) They also have an official resale marketplace, where you can sell your pre-loved pieces for brand credit and purchase other gently used pieces at more affordable price points. Find a large selection of tee styles from basic to relaxed to baby and more.

- Womens sizes XS-XXL
- Primarily Peruvian Organic Cotton + Pima Cotton
Sustainability note: not every piece from this brand is made from natural materials. They do carry some rayon blends. Each description has a menu describing that product’s environmental impact, and they are transparent with which materials. (I don’t love seeing synthetics, but I do appreciate the transparency.)
LA Relaxed
I’ve posted about LA Relaxed for many years here on eco club. I haven’t personally worn their pieces in a few years, but I have loved their quality in the past. This is a brand that’s all about super cozy basics that you basically want to live in. Their current line up of sustainable t-shirts includes baby, pointelle, slub long sleeves, delicate tanks, and cozy basic cardigans.
